Why Compression Clothing Is Rising in Popularity

The treatment of challenging behaviors such as self-injurious behaviors, aggression, catatonia, and disruptive behaviors in children and adolescents with severe autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability is a complex issue.   A number of different treatment approaches have been used with some success, but the use of compression clothing as a treatment approach is emerging as a sustainable long-term option.

Compression clothing is a type of garment that applies gentle pressure to the body. It is often used to help relieve pain or discomfort and can also be used for therapeutic purposes. The use of compression clothing for treating challenging behaviors in children and adolescents with severe autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability is a relatively new approach, but one that is showing promise.

A small study published in 2016 found that compression shirts were effective in reducing self-injurious behaviors in children with a severe autism spectrum disorder. The children wore the compression shirts for eight hours per day over a period of four weeks. The researchers found that the compression shirts helped to reduce the frequency and intensity of self-injurious behaviors.

Compression Clothing is an emerging treatment that shows promise as an effective strategy for managing these issues over the long term.
