Aiding Autism with Sensory Aids

According to the ABS, in 2015 1 in 150 Australians suffered from Autism, with 83% of those diagnosed under the age of 25. For any young person growing up with autism, their senses are heightened, and physical stimulus from clothing can be a source of irritation to those who have autism, or even anxiety, ADHD, or sensory processing difficulties.

At Caring Clothing, we provide a great solution to this issue through calming sensory compression clothing. This clothing is manufactured so that there is no internal stitching, which is largely what causes irritation due to constant physical stimulus on the body. There are also no seams which makes them as comfortable for the wearer as possible.

Furthermore, the fabric is breathable, moisture-wicking, high-quality sensory fabric, which ensures the wearer remains cool and comfortable, particularly in the heat of Summer.

Calming Compression Clothing Options

There are a variety of clothing options available to suit everyday needs for people with autism, ADHD, Anxiety, or Sensory Processing difficulties. They are:

  • Short-sleeve tops
  • Long sleeve tops
  • Singlets/vests
  • Shorts
  • Leggings
  • Short socks
  • Long socks
  • Bodysuits
  • Dignity suits (adults only)

Tops

The short and long sleeve tops are designed to be worn as clothing or underneath another shirt to assist in regulating sensory information from the body, enabling the wearer to remain focused and calm while at work or school. They are designed for all-day wear and provide proprioceptive feedback (information received from muscles and tendons, concerning body movement and position) through gentle pressure.

Shorts and Leggings

The sensory compression shorts and leggings are designed to be work underneath other pants and also provide proprioceptive feedback to the length of the short/leggings. This again helps children and adults remain calm and focused throughout the day and is extremely comfortable with no internal or centre seams. It also has no tags.

Socks

Calming Sensory Socks once again have no seam along the heel and are great for anyone of any age with autism, anxiety, ADHD, a sensory processing disorder, or even just hypersensitivity in their feet. Manufactured from bamboo with polyester/elastane, CalmCare socks are made to provide relief and comfort. Furthermore, given that the socks don’t have a shaped heel, they are far easier to put on and children don’t grow out of them as fast as they otherwise would.

Other Aids

The Wish Activity Blanket is a fidget activity lap-size quilt giving users sensory and tactile stimulation. This is great for those who have autism as well as someone with ADHD, Alzheimer's, or other forms of dementia.

Furthermore, the blanket can also be used as a pillow slip, so you can insert a heat pack or pillow to increase comfort.

When an individual has Autism or ADHD, sensory processing can make life really difficult in certain situations. By wearing sensory compression clothing, individuals can feel far more comfortable, secure, and relaxed, ultimately reducing the risk of meltdowns. The body awareness created through proprioceptive feedback will also help improve motor skills and increase focus and attention.
